Prof Malcolm J Todd's Bio:

I am the founding Head of the School of Social, Psychological and Communication Sciences (SoSPCS) and Professor of Social Science Education at Leeds Metropolitan University, UK. The School is one of the largest within the University with: + circa ?13 million income + 2300 student registrations in 2013 + 100 academic staff + 100+ Masters level students and 30+ PhD students The School incorporates five divisions: Politics and International Relations; Sociology; Psychology; Criminology and Speech and Language Therapy. The School is the home to an exciting new University research Centre 'The Centre for Applied Social Research'. I have a particular interest in how to best support the student learning experience. I have been involved with transnational education, and have developed strong partnership relationships with HEIs in Hong Kong, the Netherlands and the USA. I have chaired validation and institutional approval events in the UK, mainland Europe, Malaysia, China and Hong Kong. I have a wide range of teaching experience, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, largely in the sociology of work, the sociology of protest movements, social research methods (research design, qualitative methods and policy evaluation), family studies, and applied sociology/social policy. I have published widely on learning and teaching matters in the social sciences, especially around the themes of learner autonomy, work-based learning and the teaching of 'race' and ethnicity. I was, until 2010, the Associate Director of the national Subject Centre for Sociology, Anthropology and Politics, part of the Higher Education Academy (HEA). Currently I am leading on a national project for the HEA and HEFCE on teaching about Islam in the Social Sciences. I have been a Trustee of the British Sociology Association and member of the Heads and Professors of Sociology.
